Nutrition For Birth to 6 months
-
Breastfeeding is the natural and best way of infant feeding because it saves lives and improves the quality of life of infants and young children. During the first six months, the baby should only be given breast milk; this is called exclusive breastfeeding. Breast milk contains all the nutrients the baby needs and exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months protects your baby from many illnesses, such as diarrhoea and respiratory infections.
- Children from birth to 6 months should be exclusively breastfed (do not give other foods and fluids including water).
- Children should breastfed on demand, both day and night to ensure that the baby consumes adequate milk and to enhance milk production.
- Mothers should continue breastfeeding even when the baby is ill.
- While breastfeeding the baby mothers should not engage in any other chores but sit comfortably and breastfeed.
