Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR)

Cutting Back and Harvesting of the Trees

Farmers are supposed to be harvesting the trees from 2 to 6 months so that the trees regenerate faster and more erect.

What to do when cutting back the trees

  1. Using appropriate and sharp instruments such as cutlasses, axes, knives, handsaws (small) and slashers

  1. When pruning, we need to start from the bottom of the trunk going upwards so that branches should not break. Broken branches are an entry point for infections but also causes delays in development of the trees.
  2. Ideally, stems should be pruned up to half way up the trunk while small, and up to two thirds of the way up, once they are over 2 m tall. If too many side branches are pruned from the main stem it may be easily broken by livestock or even by strong winds.
  3. The best time to prune is during the dry season (July-October) because farmers have ample time to do other chores. It has to be noted that taking care of regenerants is an all year-round thing.
