Planting

4.1. Sowing

  • Sowing on a nursery bed is a key requirement for optimum tomato production.
  • Sow the seeds in rows set across the bed
  • Rows should be 15 to 30cm apart.
  • Distribute the seeds thinly and evenly along the rows.
  • Avoid using the broadcasting method of sowing as it interferes with many agronomic practices such as weeding, pest and disease control, fertilization etc.

4.2  Spacing and plant population

  • Seedlings should be transplanted at 90 cm x 60 cm
  • Remove side shoots to increase fruit size
  • Plant population of tomato if planted at a spacing of 60 by 90cm is 18500 plants per hectare and 7400 plants per acre
