5.1. Hardening
- Harden transplants before transplanting to the main field.
- Harden a week before transplanting the seedlings into the main field.
- Harden before the formation of buds, flowers and fruits.
5.2 Transplanting
- Transplant seedlings at 4-5 weeks.
5.3. Weeding
- Weeds should be removed in the field
5.4 Fertilization
- Two to three days before planting apply 100g of “B” Compound fertilizer per square metre.
- Top dress 5 weeks after transplanting with 20 g of CAN per sq metre using one cupful of cup No. 22.
NOTE: please, refer to your extension worker for recommended fertilizers for your area
5.5. Pruning
- Prune old leaves, buds and branches.
- A Tomato plant should remain with four branches at a time.
- Unpruned plants usually have vigorous foliage with more fruits but of smaller sizes.
- Pruning helps increase the size and quality of the fruit; enhance earliness of the crown set (flower set), reduce pest pressure and enhance spray coverage
5.6. Stalking
- Stalk tomatoes to keep tomato plants upright and prevent the plants from falling due to heavy fruit set.
- Staking also helps to position a plant well for even praying.
5.7. Mulching
- Mulching to avoid excessive water loss.
- Mulching should be done to crops under irrigation only.
- Mulching is mostly recommended if tomato is grown in areas with high temperature or if tomato is grown on soils which loses water so easily
