Commodity management

5.1. Hardening

  • Harden transplants before transplanting to the main field.
  • Harden a week before transplanting the seedlings into the main field.
  • Harden before the formation of buds, flowers and fruits.

5.2 Transplanting

  • Transplant seedlings at 4-5 weeks.

5.3. Weeding

  • Weeds should be removed in the field

5.4 Fertilization

  • Two to three days before planting apply 100g of “B” Compound fertilizer per square metre.
  • Top dress 5 weeks after transplanting with 20 g of CAN per sq metre using one cupful of cup No. 22.

NOTE: please, refer to your extension worker for recommended fertilizers for your area

5.5. Pruning

  • Prune old leaves, buds and branches.
  • A Tomato plant should remain with four branches at a time.
  • Unpruned plants usually have vigorous foliage with more fruits but of smaller sizes.
  • Pruning helps increase the size and quality of the fruit; enhance earliness of the crown set (flower set), reduce pest pressure and enhance spray coverage

5.6. Stalking

  • Stalk tomatoes to keep tomato plants upright and prevent the plants from falling due to heavy fruit set.
  • Staking also helps to position a plant well for even praying.

5.7. Mulching

  • Mulching to avoid excessive water loss.
  • Mulching should be done to crops under irrigation only.
  • Mulching is mostly recommended if tomato is grown in areas with high temperature or if tomato is grown on soils which loses water so easily
