8.0. POST-HARVEST HANDLING

  • The banana bunches should be kept away from direct sun.
  • Wrap them in protective material like dried banana leaves to avoid being damaged during the various harvesting processes.

8.1. Collection shade

  • Store in a collection shade with an efficient layout that can be easily accessible to farmers and buyers.
  • Ensure extreme hygiene practices are being practiced in close proximity to the collection shed.

8.2. Pack House operation

  • Remove undesirable looking fruits and those with damaged by pests and diseases.
  • Carefully remove all dead flower remains.

Cleaning

  • Ensure that fruits are cleaned and drained of excess water.

Packing

  • Wrap the bananas with protective material like soft paper or the dry bananas leaves to avoid damaging them in storage or during transportation.

Storage

  • Store in a cool dry place but ensure that the storage unit is not too cold.

Transportation

  • All bananas should be transported to the markets while they are still green to avoid softening and reduce the damage rate.
  • Make sure that they are not exposed to direct sunlight during transportation.
